How do cultural identity, personal background and community support shape long-term wellness? Dr. Juliana Cardoso, associate professor of psychology at Hastings College, will address these questions during her Invited Faculty Lecture, “Lessons from a Latina Health Psychologist: Advice from an Insider-Outsider Perspective.”
The talk, which is free and open to the public, takes place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Ave.).
Drawing from her research in health disparities and women’s experiences in medical settings, Cardoso will explore how a “strengths-based” approach to health focuses on protective cultural and personal factors rather than illness alone.
“One of the most profound changes that shaped my identity has been the ability to apply theoretical frameworks to better understand not only health outcomes — but also myself,” Cardoso said.
Cardoso will also discuss navigating spaces as both an “insider” within her community and an “outsider” in clinical research, offering practical insights into self-discovery, public health and patient advocacy.
The Invited Faculty Lecture is a traditional honor at Hastings College dating back to 1967, sponsored by the Hastings College Lecture Series. Each spring, students select two faculty members to present on a topic of their choice during the following academic year. Dr. Brie Myre, assistant professor of biology, will deliver the second lecture of the series on March 17, 2027.
About Dr. Juliana Cardoso
Dr. Juliana Cardoso is an associate professor of psychology passionate about improving women’s experiences in medical settings. She specializes in mixed-methods research, health disparities, health decisions, HIV, sexual health, risk perception, and community-based participatory research.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and her first master’s degree from Queens College in New York. She earned a second master’s degree and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at El Paso. Outside the classroom, Cardoso enjoys traveling, cooking and listening to music.
