Hastings College to host PCUSA Co-Moderator Tony Larson for Chapel service

Hastings College will welcome Rev. Tony Larson, Co-Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA), to campus to lead a special chapel service on Wednesday, November 5, at 1:30 p.m. The chapel service, in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Avenue) is free and open to the public.

Rev. Tony Larson, Co-Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will be on campus to lead a special chapel service on Wednesday, November 5, at 1:30 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel.

As Co-Moderator, Larson holds the highest-elected position in the denomination, serving as an ambassador for the church. His visit highlights the strong connection between the institution and the national church body.

The November 5 service will also include the commissioning of Hastings College’s winter athletes. The Hastings College Choir is also scheduled to perform.

In addition to leading the worship service, Larson will spend time on campus meeting with local pastors, as well as with students involved in the college’s chapel services and Christian Ministry Program. He will also be working with college staff on next summer’s Hastings Youth Conference.

About Rev. Larson
Rev. Anthony “Tony” Larson, the son of a Presbyterian minister, was raised in North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Public Policy Analysis and Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and received his Master of Divinity from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond,Virginia.

Larson has extensive experience in youth ministry, having served as a co-leader for the Synod Youth Council for the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic and as a planning team member for the Montreat Youth Conference. He currently serves as pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Surfside, South Carolina, and is enrolled in Doctor of Ministry studies at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He has been married for 16 years to wife Heather, father by adoption to her son, Stephen Larson, and recently became grandfather to Nora James Larson. He describes himself as a “semi-professional nerd” and backs that up as a Level 50 Pokémon Go Trainer, captain of the RogueRev Trivia Team and is officially sorted into House Ravenclaw.

“The story of my life and faith is one of being called by God through the voices of others,” Larson said. “In each chapter of my life story, there have been people who sensed a place where my gifts and the needs of community overlapped, and they named my gifts and challenged me to develop and use them as a disciple of Jesus Christ.”
