Dr. Catherine Biba teaches the history of the United States in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religion. Her courses include: College Sports in America, the History of the Family in the U.S., the History of the American West, Natural Disasters in the U.S., U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction, America in World War II, U.S. Women’s History, and the U.S. History survey. Additionally, she has taught special topics courses on the history of single Americans, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. Biba earned her B.A. in English and History from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2007, and her M.A. (2011) and Ph.D (2015) from Cornell University.
Her research and teaching interests include gender and the history of the American family, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of single, never-wed women in mid-century America. She also has devoted time to researching and creating her unique course, The History of College Sports in America.
When not in the classroom, Dr. Biba enjoys traveling (near and far!), reading fiction, eating excellent food that she did not cook, and watching college athletics. Recently, she began rebuilding a 1967 Serro Scotty travel trailer she has lovingly christened “Darryl.” Her favorite things about Hastings College are her incredible colleagues and seeing the moment when students realize that history is actually far more interesting than they previously thought.
