Now in its 6th year, the Hastings College Bronco Gallop 5K run/1 mile walk will partner with the Extra Mile, a teacher education organization at the college, to raise awareness about Hastings Food 4 Thought. The event, scheduled for Sunday, September 16, is part of Hastings College’s Celebration Weekend.
“Service-learning is integral to the Hastings College experience so as we planned the 130th Founders Day celebration, the inauguration and the 2012 Homecoming, it was very important to include a community service project among the weekend’s festivities,” said Hauli Sabatka, Hastings College’s Senior Director of Alumni Relations and College Events. “Working with the Extra Mile to support Food 4 Thought, a student-founded and student-run organization, was a perfect fit.”
Run/walk participants may register beginning at 1:30 p.m. on September 16th near Hastings College’s Morrison-Reeves Science Center (717 N. Ash) or online at www.hastings.edu/celebrate. The run/walk will then start at 2 p.m. Registration is free although the Extra Mile will be gathering freewill donations on behalf of Food 4 Thought.
Started at Hastings’ Longfellow Elementary by Hastings College students, Food 4 Thought currently provides 62 families at five Hastings elementary with backpacks filled with food each weekend. For many students who qualify for free and reduced lunches, the food in these backpacks provides their only access meals over weekends when they are not eating breakfasts and lunches at school.
Extra Mile is comprised of teacher education students enrolled in HC’s Communication, Consultation and Collaborative Partnership course. Throughout the course, students must work to raise awareness on a community issue. This year, the students have selected to raise awareness about Hastings Food 4 Thought.
Other partners for the run/walk include the HC Alumni Association, the HC Foundation and the Hastings Family YMCA.
