After a highly successful launch in January, the Hastings College Community Leadership Challenge is doubling to two sessions this academic year, giving more seniors in high school the opportunity to enhance their leadership and problem-solving skills, and to potentially earn a scholarship. The challenge is also accepting non-Nebraska residents this year.
During the weekend conference and workshop, students explore the components, meaning and importance of community, while using design thinking to solve real-world, community-based challenges.
“We’re thrilled to expand the Community Leadership Challenge, providing even more high school seniors with the tools they need to become impactful leaders,” said Dave Rippe, director of the Hastings College Scott Scholars Program. “This initiative is not just about developing skills; it’s about fostering a mindset of collaboration and innovation that will empower students to address the challenges facing their communities today and in the future.”
The two sessions sessions are:
- November 15-17, 2024, with an application deadline of October 23
- January 31-February 2, 2025, with an application deadline of January 10
Up to 20 high-achieving high school seniors from Nebraska and surrounding states will be selected for each session, which will be held on campus and downtown Hastings. Participants will dive into the components, meaning and importance of community while developing a sense of leadership and understanding how leaders and organizations shape communities.
All costs, including housing and meals, are covered for participants.
Students only need to apply once to be considered for both sessions, as students not selected for the November session, will be rolled over and considered for the January session.
Up to seven participating students in each session may be selected for the Hastings College Scott Scholars Program, which includes a scholarship that covers 100 percent of tuition, fees and room and board to Hastings College, in partnership with the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation.

The application requires an activity resume, a 500-word essay and an optional video. Students must have also submitted an application for admission to Hastings College to be selected to participate.
