From adversity to advocacy: Liggins to speak on 21st century leadership at Hastings College

Terry Liggins, a National Champion Division II athlete who has become an advocate for life coaching teens, young professionals and vulnerable adults in Sioux Falls, S.D., is speaking at Hastings College about leadership in the diverse climate of the 21st century. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is Sunday, February 23 at 7:00 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel (800 N Turner Avenue).

Liggins, a first generation college student, was born in North Omaha, Nebraska, and raised by a single mom of six. His childhood was saturated with adversity and chaos, drugs and violence, gangs and trauma — in his home, neighborhoods and 13 schools he attended as a youth.

He is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, and aims to inspire students and prepare them for life after college.

While being a student-athlete at USD, where he ran track and was an 6x All-American hurdler, Liggins presided over five different student groups, and took on leadership roles that influenced his life during and after college.

Passionate about workforce development, entrepreneurship, mentorship-in-the-margins and effective communication as a full-time consultant and coach, Liggins is the founder and chief executive officer at TLC Services and Hurdle Life Coach Foundation, which is an organization committed to redefining the support of youth, adults and families and the way they experience trauma and adversity.

At USD, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and minored in leadership studies, then completed a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in non-profit organizations. He’s recognized for partnering with startup nonprofits, corporations, charitable groups and advocacy efforts that help to advance a healing-informed society that is inclusive and equitable in all of its practices.

He also helps teams develop a trauma-informed culture that is safe for all people by specializing in recruitment and retention strategies through a whole-person focus.
