Hastings College and the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC) invite high school juniors to apply for Open Space for the Visual Arts, a week-long summer immersion program designed for current high school juniors passionate about art.

During Open Space, participants will explore a variety of art mediums through hands-on workshops led by Hastings College faculty and guest artists. Students will spend an entire day in each studio, working to gain experience in:

  • Glassblowing
  • Ceramics
  • Screen printing
  • Sculpture
  • Cold wax and oil collage

The week culminates in a student exhibition and reception on Saturday morning, where participants showcase their creations to family, friends and the community.

Jackson Scholars Program

New this year, up to eight Open Space participants may be selected for the 2026 Jackson Scholars Program. The program includes a full-ride scholarship to attend Hastings College and major in art. This award covers 100 percent of tuition, general fees, room and meals for four years. Scholars also gain access to professional enrichment opportunities designed to support their artistic growth.

Participants not selected for Jackson Scholars Program will instead receive a top art scholarship to attend Hastings College.

“Open Space is a wonderful opportunity to introduce aspiring artists to our amazing faculty members and facilities here at the JDAC,” said Dr. Brian Corr, associate professor of art. “It allows our faculty and participants to get to know one another, create some amazing art pieces, and discover how you can turn your passion for art into a career.”

To apply, students must:

  • Be current high school juniors interested in studying art in college.
  • Submit a digital portfolio containing 6–8 high-resolution images of their work.
  • Demonstrate good academic standing through their grade-point average.

The program is valued at more than $1,000 per student; however, thanks to generous support from the Jackson Dinsdale Endowment Fund, students pay only $250 to attend, with additional financial assistance available for those who qualify.
