Nebraska Public Media’s ‘Backyard Farmer’ coming to Hastings College

Nebraska Public Media is hitting the road this spring and offering a great lineup of events and entertainment across Central Nebraska — including family activities and recording an episode of “Backyard Farmer” at Hastings College on Monday, June 10.

During its On the Road Tour stop in Hastings, Nebraska Public Media is hosting a PBS KIDS Family Event from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Hastings Public Library, followed by “Backyard Farmer” at Hastings College. All events are free and open to the public.

“Backyard Farmer” events begin at 4:30 p.m. in the greenspace by Hurley-McDonald Hall and Perkins Library. This includes hands-on gardening activities for the whole family, as well as a question-and-answer session.

Community members are then invited to be part of the audience when an episode of the popular lawn and garden series is recorded at 6:00 p.m. Seating will be provided. Parking is available in the lot by Morrison-Reeves Science Center or other campus lots. Circle Drive will be closed for the event.

The June 10 recording at Hastings College will air June 13 and include a special segment on the Hastings College Arboretum.

“Backyard Farmer” is a co-production between Nebraska Public Media and Nebraska Extension. It features host Kim Todd, Nebraska Extension landscape horticulture specialist, and a panel of Nebraska Extension experts, including: Kyle Broderick, plant and pest diagnostics extension educator; Kelly Feehan, extension educator – horticulture; Roch Gaussoin, turfgrass specialist and Wayne Ohnesorg, extension educator and entomologist. During the show they answer questions about insect pests and disease, turf and fruits and vegetables, as well as best practices for landscape design and general horticulture topics.
