Performance artist, poet to speak at Hastings College

Hastings College will host Chicago-based performance artist and poet Marty McConnell on Thursday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. at the French Memorial Chapel on Hastings College Campus.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

marty mcconnellMcConnell speaks as a part of Women’s History Month with her presentation of  “Conjuring Survival: the role of magic in art, activism, and defusing despair.”

She is a seven-time National Poetry Slam team member, previous National Underground Poetry Individual Competition (NUPIC) champion and has appeared on HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam.” She runs Vox Ferus in Chicago, an organization dedicated to empowering and energizing individuals and communities through the written and spoken word.

Hastings College sophomore Carly Spotts-Falzone, a 2016 American Forensic Association national finalist, will give a special introductory performance before McConnell’s presentation.

McConnell’s presentation is sponsored by the Hastings College Artist Lecture Series, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Radical Notion, Sigma Tau Delta and the departments of sociology, psychology, communication, languages and literatures, history, political science, art and philosophy and religion.

Marty McConnell is a seven-time National Poetry Slam team member, previous National Underground Poetry Individual Competition (NUPIC) champion and has appeared on HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam.”

She runs Vox Ferus in Chicago, an organization dedicated to empowering and energizing individuals and communities through the written and spoken word. She is the author of wine for a shotgun, which received the Silver Medal in the Independent Publishers Awards, and holds an MFA in creative writing/poetry from Sarah Lawrence College.
