On Monday, November 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Hazelrigg Student Union (705 E. 9th St.), Hastings College students and the Political Science Department will host a global summit on sustainability. The public is invited to participate in this free event.
The summit will feature students from Introduction to Politics and World Politics courses representing various including Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Rwanda, Jamaica and Ghana. Through presentations, the students will provide a snapshot of each country’s countries economic, environmental and minority policies.
Dr. Ingrid Bego, Assistant Professor of Political Science, instructed the students to look at how countries can develop their economies while protecting and valuing the environment.
“We can no longer afford to ignore environmental degradation whether we live in Nebraska or in Russia or Rwanda,” said Dr. Bego, who is in her second year on the Hastings College faculty. “If we want our future generations of people to enjoy the same benefits as we have received, we must make sure that we develop economically in a way that is responsible and sustainable. Short term development is simply no longer an option.”
